New Dates for Daylight Savings Time in 2007

In anticipation of upcoming events in 2007, we wish to remind our customers and friends about the new Daylight Savings Time (DST) change. This year, DST is extended, starting three weeks earlier at 2:00 A.M. Sunday March 11, 2007 and ending one week later at 2:00 A.M. on Sunday November 4, 2007.  In anticipation of this change we have gathered some information and resources for your review.

Microsoft

Microsoft has set up a website to assist customers in dealing with the DST 2007 changes. That page can be accessed at: http//www.microsoft.com/dst2007.  In simplest terms, current versions of Microsoft Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003, Windows XP and Windows Vista that are patched with the latest versions will be all set. Microsoft is making provisions to support the new DST change dates in Windows 2000, but it will not happen as part of the automatic patch updates.

More information on Microsoft Windows and affected Microsoft applications, how you can acquire them and when they will be available can be found on the Microsoft website at http//www.microsoft.com/dst2007. Links to corresponding Technical Knowledge Base Articles and on-demand web casts are also available there.

Apple

As of February 2007, Apple has posted updates that will allow Mac systems running system software version 10.3 (Panther) or higher, including all 10.4 (Tiger) releases, to recognize the new dates for DST starting and ending. Those updates are downloadable through Apple's Software Updates utility.

Users of system software 10.2.8 (Jaguar) or earlier should disable automatic setting of the system time from internet time servers. Mac OS 9 users should disable the “automatically adjust for daylight savings time” option. These systems will need to be adjusted to DST manually on the appropriate days. For more information, please visit http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305056.

FirstClass

For those customers with FirstClass servers, if you are running the recent 8.3 release, it includes the new DST start/end policy. Make sure you have the correct time zone selected in your system profile.

If you are running a version of FirstClass prior to 8.3, you will need to bump the time zone up an hour on the machine running the FirstClass Server when the Spring time change occurs.  If for some reason you are still not on version 8.3 when the Fall time change occurs, you will have to undo the change.

Regardless of the version of FirstClass you are using, you should continue to run your server with the system profile time zone, OS time zone and users’ time zones as they are today.

Other

We have listed only the basic information above for the most popular vendors. Other vendors may have solutions available specific to their products. If you are concerned about a package you use, please give us a call and we will help you through the change.

We hope this information will make the switch to the new DST time a little easier. As always, we are available to answer any questions you may have about this issue and will be happy to remotely or in person inspect your systems to prevent any undesired effects from this change.

Best Regards,

The Team at Cashman Computer Associates
